Tanesini on truth and epistemic vice

چکیده
Alessandra Taniesini's ‘The Mismeasure of the Self’ develops an internalist account epistemic vice. On this view, vices are grounded in attitudes towards self: fatalism, self-satisfaction, narcissistic infatuation, and self-abasement. The is insofar as it claims to ground both nature normativity vice within subject's skull. In paper, I argue against internalism: vices, show, need a normative hook outside skull explain their vicious nature. other words, ‘mis’ ‘mismeasure’ self demands externalist unpacking.

Epistemic modality and truth conditions
Within the linguistics literature it is often claimed that epistemic modality, unlike other kinds of modality, does not contribute to truth-conditional content. In this paper I challenge this view. I reanalyze a variety of arguments which have been used in support of the non-truth-conditional view and show that they can be handled on an alternative analysis of epistemic modality. # 2006 Elsevie...
متن کاملTruth, Belief and Certainty in Epistemic Logic
Standard logic tends to reduce propositions to their truth conditions. However propositions with the same truth conditions are not the contents of the same thoughts just as they are not the senses of synonymous sentences. I will first define a much finer criterion of propositional identity that takes into account predications that we make in expressing propositions. In my view, propositions hav...
متن کاملEpistemic Friction: Reflections on Knowledge, Truth, and Logic
Knowledge requires both freedom and friction. Freedom to set up our epistemic goals, choose the subject matter of our investigations, espouse cognitive norms, design research programs, etc., and friction (constraint) coming from two directions: the object or target of our investigation, i.e., the world in a broad sense, and our mind as the sum total of constraints involving the knower. My goal ...
متن کاملRelating Truth, Knowledge and Belief in Epistemic States
We define and investigate a structure incorporating what is true, what is known and what is believed by a rational agent in models of the S4.2 logic of knowledge. The notion of KBR-structures introduced, provides a fine-grained modal analysis of an agent’s epistemic state, actually one that differentiates knowledge from belief and accounts for an agent without full introspective power (concerni...
متن کاملTrustworthiness and Truth: The Epistemic Pitfalls of Internet Accountability
Since anonymous agents can spread misinformation with impunity, many people advocate for greater accountability for internet speech. This paper provides a veritistic argument that accountability mechanisms can cause significant epistemic problems for internet encyclopedias and social media communities. I show that accountability mechanisms can undermine both the dissemination of true beliefs an...
